someone who is able to help us navigate our journey when the unexpected (and oftentimes uninvited) becomes reality.

I know it's not easy to seek out help; and at the risk of sounding like a cliché, deciding to seek support and then following through with the phone call or email to arrange the appointment is truly an honorable act of courage and faith; it's your inner voice reminding you that YOU ARE WORTH IT, and my job is to help remind you why.

Why do people seek counseling?
People come to counseling for all different reasons, and every story matters. We all have a past, but it's our present moment that calls us to attention right now. Perhaps you wish to heal, move on, let go or dream bigger; every story has the ability to create light on our path. Some mental health concerns may be anxiety, depression, trauma, fatigue, loss, grief, illness, abuse, domestic or relationship challenges, stress and adjustment issues. In my personal practice, I welcome clients with any life story, but focus specifically during life-creating and changing moments, such as infertility, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, parenting, mindfulness, creative exploration and living life well.
How does counseling help?
The most important aspect of counseling is the client-counselor relationship. We live in a world of relationships; the same is true in counseling. If the relationship is built on trust and acceptance, counseling gives you the building blocks of strength, empowerment and hope to change what needs to be changed and rise above in ways that may have once only been a distant dream. Some ways you can see a healthy therapeutic relationship bloom is by noticing increasing mental wellness, positive choices, better sleep, healthy decisions, greater abundance and clarity. It is important to give counseling time, but it's also important to make sure the therapeutic relationship is a good fit for you and your lifestyle.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes! The beauty of counseling is that you are able to say whatever you want to say, and it stays within the space between us. The only time confidentiality may be breached is if your personal safety is at stake, or the safety of a minor or elder.
How long is therapy?
A typical session is 50 minutes; sometimes a bit longer, and others a bit shorter. As for the longevity of the therapeutic relationship, it really depends on your wants and needs. Some people come to counseling for just a few weeks, while others stay much longer. Its important to note that while one issue often brings us to counseling, the original rupture does not occur in a vacuum. Oftentimes much more is brought to the surface which reminds us that the timeline of counseling is fluid.
Do I come alone?
It depends! I see individuals, couples and families. Depending on your needs, we will make the arrangement fit.
Do I need to tell anyone that I'm seeing a counselor?
Nope! Eventually, you may find it helpful to have a friend or partner on your mental wellness journey, but this is your time to work on the always-amazing YOU!
Can I talk about things I'm not supposed to talk about?
Bring it all! This is one area of your life where you can talk about whatever you want to talk about. God, sex, politics, living in St. Louis and not liking baseball (yikes!); all the conversations you attempt to keep under wraps are welcome. If we're in a group setting, I do monitor the conversations and keep them comfortable for all involved.
Have you ever been to therapy?
Yes. I love therapy! In fact, it's why I became a therapist. This is actually my second career; my first career was graphic design and psychology. I went to therapy as a child when I was struggling with migraines and depression, and then I went again after I had my children as I struggled with postpartum challenges. I am grateful for all the helpers I have met in my life. I actively work on myself each and every day.
Will you tell me what to do?
No. That can sometimes be the biggest bummer about therapy. I've had many clients beg me to just "tell me what to do!" Sometimes we're needing to make a decision about this or that, and it's BIG and needs to be made NOW! Those tough decisions have to be made my you, but I can help you process how you feel, and hopefully empower you to make the best choice.
Anything else I need to know?
